Weeds & Limbs
The Mowing Crew has been mowing the City right-of-ways daily.  They have also sprayed 275 gallons of weed killer on riprap, guardrails, sign posts and other places to help reduce time spent trimming weeds.

The Limb Crew had 144 scheduled stops the week of 5/18, 164 scheduled and 392 unscheduled stops during the week of 6/1, and 122 scheduled and 75 unscheduled stops the week of 6/15.  In a new effort, we had a company grind up our limb pile on Mulberry Road.  The company ground up 2400 cubic yards in about 4 days.  They hauled the resulting debris back to their yard in order to recycle it into mulch.  Previously, the City would burn the limbs, resulting in quite a bit of smoke.  This process required special permits from the Environmental Protection Agency.  Mulching/recycling worked out well, and the cost was similar to burning.

Street Department crews removed three very large trees at Beltline and Johnson Hill Road that were dying and dropping limbs onto Johnson Hill Road.

Sweeping
The street sweeper has been out sweeping on a daily basis.

Drainage
Street Crews have been busy cleaning catch basins and flushing culverts to keep up with the heavy rains.  A bad storm sewer was replaced under Blackjack.

Mosquito Spraying
On June 1st we began spraying for mosquitoes at 4-7 a.m. and 7-10 p.m.  Spraying is done on a daily basis, and we run a continuous route through the City.   Residents should be aware that we do not spray in the rain, and this can cause a delay in the amount of time it takes for the fogger truck to return to your street.

Concrete
The Crew finished replacing 1183 sq. ft. of bad sidewalk at Main & Combs.  They replaced 70’ of high back curb on Ravenwood.

Asphalt
The Crew finished repairing bad spots on the roads that are scheduled to be oiled and chipped.  They are now working on bad edges in preparation for the oiling and chipping.  They also repaired a cave in on N. Keebler caused by settling.

Construction Crew
The Construction Crew installed about 300’ of 6” water main on Jerri-Lynn, switched 9 services, and repaired the roadway.  They installed about 300’ of 6” water main on Par Drive and are now switching the services over to the new main.  In their down time, they installed a catch basin at Golfview and Beltline, and poured 20’ of curb that had fallen into the drainage ditch.  They also rebuilt a catch basin at Ohio & Olive that was falling in, and replaced the piping at the old City landfill Well #1.

Miscellaneous
Banners have been put up on Vandalia.
A number of street signs have been replaced.
Our striping crew has begun painting crosswalks and center lines on City streets.  Striping takes about 10 weeks to complete.

Concrete CrewThe Street Department Concrete Crew has been working on the 400 block of Center Street.  They have been replacing approximately 500′ of the old brick sidewalk with concrete.

Snow and Ice:  Street crews were called out at about 3AM on March 29 for a quick hit of snow of approximately 3-inches.  They salted all the streets and with warm temperatures on Sunday the snow was melted by noon.

Drainage and Miscellaneous: One crew is working on replacing bad curbs on Rosemary.  There are 270-feet of curb we are replacing.  They were also cleaning ditches and flushing culverts throughout the City on the days they couldn’t pour concrete.  Another crew has been doing asphalt work on some of the projects we did back in the winter such as Oakwood Waterline.

Both sweepers are still in the process of sweeping all of the City streets, and the limb crew is still trying to catch up on limb piles that were not called in.  PLEASE CALL IN IF YOU HAVE LIMBS 346-5214!

Construction Crew: The Henry Street sewer replacement project is still in construction.  The crew completed the St. Clair Avenue crossing in which they installed a new 8-inch main across St. Clair and set a new manhole in the center of the road.  Throughout the project, St. Clair remained closed for about a week.  The asphalt work is now finished and the road is now re-opened.  The crew is now working on the rest of the main going down the alley switching the homes from the old main to the new main in order to not interrupt service.

Street Department Crews:  One crew finished grinding out twenty-one stumps from the tree removal from City ROW this year.  They are now in the process of replacing bad curbs on Rosemary Drive and sidewalks on Seminary Street.  Another crew has been busy cleaning ditches and flushing culverts throughout the City.

During the past two weeks, both street sweepers have been out sweeping every street and alley in the City, and will continue until all are swept.

One crew finished replacing street signs that were faded or damaged, and a day and a half was spent putting up banners on Main Street in Downtown.

With recent dry weather, crews have been able to go back and finish the dirt work and seed on all the projects they were working on during the fall and winter months.

**PLEASE DO NOT RAKE YOUR LEAVES INTO THE DITCHES, IT IS AGAINST CITY ORDINANCE!

Tree Limb Pick Up: The tree limb pick-up has increased dramatically; there were 88 stops on the list, and well over 100 stops that people did not call in.

**Please note – Please call in when you have limbs to be picked up, we do not pick up leaves and yard waste!
Yard Waste Reminder:  The Street Department will have dumpsters for yard waste on April 4th and May 5th from 9AM to 4PM for all City residents.

Construction Crew: The construction crew graded and seeded at all of the projects from the fall and winter months.  Those include: Spring Street Sewer installation, Spring Street Water line installation, Oakwood and Osage water line installation.  Staff is now in the process of starting the Henry Street sewer line replacement project.  The project consists of 500 feet of 8-inch sewer main and the replacement of one man hole in the middle of St. Clair Avenue.  This project is expected to take about three weeks.

Annual Oil and Chip Street Survey: The oil and chip street survey was completed throughout the past two weeks, and consisted of driving every oiled and chipped street and alley in the City to evaluate their condition.  The survey helps determine which will need oiled and chipped in the summer.  It also includes evaluating signage, drainage issues, potholes, tree limbs, and dead trees on City ROW, etc.  This survey usually takes about five days to complete in which the Street Director and the working foreman complete the survey.

We have had two men out filling potholes throughout the City for the last two weeks.   We have also been working on cleaning catch basins to maximize drainage.  Every Friday the Street Department is responsible for emptying the trash cans downtown.

We had a crew on Maple pouring driveway aprons and doing dirt work to keep the drainage system smooth.  This work was required because of recent mine subsidence in the area.  This project is now finished, and they will be starting some smaller drainage projects on Arrowhead, Dina, and Belmont.

We will have a crew next week out replacing approximately 140 street name signs citywide.

We also had two men in the shop most of the week doing semi-annual maintenance to vehicles and equipment.  Their work included changing oil, oil filters, fuel filters, air filters, checking bolts, checking springs, etc.

Construction Crew – The construction crew finished installing the new water main at the water plant last week.  The will have to go back next week to complete the dirt work and put down grass seed when things dry out.  They also installed a new 6” water line across Keebler on March 4th for Alamo.
